I searched because I wanted to make my mother’s recipe but couldn’t read one ingredient for sure (the anise extract), and the directions were too vague. Yours is exactly the same ingredients! We are German ancestry also. Although her recipe was actually double your amount of ingredients! She made hers using just the confectionery sugar on the outside. They turned out great!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09728299518101236399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4936031485106223695.post-72647666517014135012020-04-10T06:58:28.994-06:002020-04-10T06:58:28.994-06:00This is exactly 1/2 the recipe my grandmother made...This is exactly 1/2 the recipe my grandmother made and passed down, although her ratio for the frosting was whatever looked good to her at the time.

One detail though: she did not use instant coffee. She boiled water in a saucepan, then added a large spoonful of ground coffee. After letting it brew for a bit, she strained the coffee into the dough, then usually spooned some of the hot grounds in, too. If the grounds are clumped in a large enough bunch, they add another layer of flavor to the cookie. If not, they are indistinguishable from large pepper grounds. The flavor is not off-putting, even to those who do not like coffee.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4936031485106223695.post-45197470751423377342012-10-08T12:06:34.392-06:002012-10-08T12:06:34.392-06:00Thanks for your reply! That's all I can think of. I am a coffee drinker, but I do know of a few people who keep an inexpensive coffee maker around the house for when guests come to visit or when baking requires it. You don't need a fancy brand of coffee, any black coffee would do (caffinated or not). Hope this helps.
