Christmas Cookie Bark

Got 10 minutes?  That's all it takes to make this impressive treat.  Make it for friends, for a Christmas neighbor gift, or just make it for yourself.  I think I am becoming bark obsessed!  I made some for Halloween and learned how easy it is to make it for any holiday.

Follow along and I'll show you how to make this simple, delicious cookie bark!

Christmas Cookie Bark
*Recipe inspired by Your Home Based Mom
14 whole Oreos, broken up (get the Christmas ones if you can)
1 1/2 cups pretzels, broken. (long skinny ones work great)
1 cup Christmas colored M&M's
1 lb white chocolate or almond bark (I used bark)
Christmas colored sprinkles

First, line a baking sheet with waxed paper.  Mix on the sheet the Oreos, pretzels and 3/4 cup of the M&M's.
Melt the chocolate or bark in a microwave safe bowl for 1 1/2 minutes (only if using the large bricks of bark, if using chocolate chips or smaller pieces melt 30 seconds at a time), stir, and continue melting in microwave for 30 seconds at a time until melted and smooth.  Drizzle over the candy mixture and top with extra M&M's and sprinkles.  Allow to dry at room temperature or in the refrigerator until hardened.
Break into chunks!
You can wrap these in decorative bags to give as gifts!
Enjoy :)

Hey there, I found your recipe on Pinterest, and when I clicked on the Pin it led me to another website (http://www.redskyfood.com/2013/12/christmas-cookie-bark.html). I thought you might want to know that your photos and recipe were picked up by someone else. Looks delish, and I can't wait to make it with my kids.

Anne Marie, thanks for the heads up. I'm not the original owner of the recipe so I don't mind people re-posting the recipe, but I didn't know someone took my photos and all. Weird. Thanks for letting me know, and I'm glad you were able to find my actual post! I cited on my page where I originally found the recipe. Hope you enjoy!

This looks awesome! Thanks for the recipe! I just tried to make it and I could never get the white chocolate to "drizzle." It was melted, but VERY thick. I don't think it seeped through to the bottom to grab onto all the other stuff. Guess we will see in the morning. Any hints? Melting longer just made it firmer...

Michelle, sorry you were having a hard time. Chocolate can be very difficult to melt. You may have melted it for too long or on too high of a temperature which burns the chocolate. Sometimes if the chocolate is too hot you can let it cool a bit and it will actually get more runny. Try melting for very short periods and stirring in-between or you could melt the chocolate in a double boiler. Hope that helps and I hope it still turns out.

Hi, do you use white chocolate bark or almond bark? Is one better than the other for this recipe? I am new to this :) Thanks!

Kitchen Mom said...

I used the white almond bark, but either one would work great. Your only difference would be in the flavor, but I think they both taste wonderful!

I also found your recipe through the Red Sky pin, but since it did link me to your blog I'm happy. :) I deleted that pin and found the pin to YOUR blog! Thanks for this treat - I'm one tired Momma who in a moment of weakness agreed to bake cookies for the teacher luncheon. Which I forgot about. Which is tomorrow. I made this instead and can't wait to make it for other holidays with different m&ms!

I found you through pinterest, too, on someone else's webpage but they had the courtesy to link up to your blog. :) I love your photos! Can't wait to dazzle my friends and family with this winner! Thank you!!!

Can't wait to make this, but wondering if you can freeze it. I want to make it tonight and freeze it for Christmas Day. Have you ever tried freezing it?

Kitchen Mom said...

I personally have never tried freezing it, however I have frozen many other chocolate covered treats that turn out fine. If you are making it now though it should keep well until Christmas just being placed in a tupperware at room temp maybe wrapped with waxed paper. It could easily keep for over a week!

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up to watch when you melt the white chocolate. I heated it up at the given time and it over cooked the white chocolate. I am going to try it again, not as long. PS- I could not save the over cooked white chocolate. But am excited for the finished product.

@Stephanie, thanks so much for the tip. With multiple people having this problem I have updated my blog to reflect that I microwaved for that amount of time when using the large bricks of almond bark. If using anything thinner than that (such as chips) the microwave time should be shortened. I apologize for the confusion.

The picture looks like there is something bright white over the whole thing and then something with a tan tint to it drizzled over that. Just wondering if those are two different types of chocolate or something else? Thanks for your help!

How much does this make for?

Looks like a fun project to have grandchildren help with however, we deal with a peanut allergy and even plain M&M's are made in a peanut facility. Wonder if anyone has any ideas for substitutions?

Whitney, this nearly fills a cookie sheet which can be broken up for many servings.

Also, most seasonal candy would go well with this if you don't want to use M&Ms. I make a Halloween version with candy corn.

I was wondering if you know how long this will stay fresh if I pack it in a sealed container. I'd like to make some for Christmas gifts, but I need to make one or two things at a time, then be able to store them until Christmas.

Kitchen Mom : Nicole said...

Sheila, it should keep for several weeks in an air tight container. The chocolate would be the thing that spoils the fastest and chocolate usually stays fresh for a while. You could probably freeze this as well but it may change the coloring of the chocolate.

Hello, I do use salted pretzels, good question.

TIP: If you add shorting or coconut oil it helps the white chocolate melt and pour better. I just add 1 Tbsp at a time while heating.

I used the white chocolate wafers and they did melt, but not enough to drizzle. So what I did was put the melted chocolate in a zip lock bag, cut a TINY bit of the corner off and drizzled it that way. I still had to lightly spread the chocolate out to get the whole thing covered, but it now looks like the picture. Hopefully it will work out.

I recommend melting chocolate for no more than 30% power of most microwaves for 1 minute to begin. Stir and repeat for 1 more minute. Stir and then 30 seconds each time. When chocolate gets almost completely melted, remove and stir until it's smooth and drizzly. Works every time.

I use the chocolate discs and I put a small amount of oil in the bowl before I melt the chocolate in the microwave. This makes it a bit more viscous. I use about a half a tablespoon for 1 pound.

I used a spoonful of virgin coconut oil with my white chocolate chips (melted in the microwave) and it was smooth as could be - amazing and SUPER easy recipe! Thanks so much :)

I made this and added chocolate Chex. Good, but too sweet for me. Maybe next time I will add some nuts.

Have you tried to put it in a cookie cutter and try it out?

Someone just gave us this recipe as a Christmas present it was awesome. We were wondering what the white stuff on the top was. Now I know. It was really sweet. I wonder if anyone has a way to make it less sweet. Has anyone tried it with dark chocolate? It was yummy and I would certainly eat it again! LOL

I just made this and it's very easy. I used the vanilla almond bark. I cut the squares up,put in a large glass bowl , added about a tablespoon of shortening . I microwaved it for for 20-30 second intervals checking the consistency and stirring with a wire whisk. Mrcrowaves are all different wattages and you need to be careful not to over heat or it won't pour nicely. I ended up at about 1 min 40 seconds . I had a recipe for making chocolate covered strawberries that had you add shortening and it worked great for a smooth consistency and help them set up better. I have added shortening ever since and had great luck. Mine poured great and spread quite well . Yes it's a super sweet candy, but most vanilla based candies are. The salty pretzels help tone it down though. You can basically add or leave out items based on your families tastes and yes milk chocolate would be yummy too !

I would like to make this for my officers for my christmas party and fill up a mason jar to give to each of them. I have 10 officers so how many batches do you believe I will have to make?

Unknown said...

Could you just mix all the ingredients in a bowl and pour onto your cookie sheet? I was just thinking, would definitely have the white chocolate going all around your cookie/mm/pretzel mix.

sweetdreams47 said...

Depending on the size of your mason jars, one of these broken up batches may fill 2 or 3 jars. I just made my first batch!

I found that I can get the chocolate to drizzle, but after breaking apart, I still had a ton on the bottom that the chocolate didn't cover. To fix this I took the hardened "slab", flipped it over, then put all the loose pieces back on. I melted another bar and drizzled again. Sure, this whole dessert is sweet, but that's what the kids love! I have requests from last year to make sure this is on my cookie tray!

I'm not a great lover of melting any kind of chocolate in the microwave. Have found the best way is using the good old stove top and double saucepan (or something similar). This method has never failed me and you have more control. One tip though is to make sure you don't get water in the chocolate. Hope this might help anyone with microwave problems.

Glad I found this recipe. For those that do not want to melt the chocolate in the microwave and do not have a double boiler. You can use a crock pot. Put the chocolate in Mason jars. Fill the crock pot with water and turn the temp to low. It will take a little bit for the chocolate to melt. But once it is melted it will not harden sitting in the crock pot. I use this method when dipping pretzels etc.

I love this recipe! I’ve made it the last 3 years at Christmas time it’s easy to make and it looks just like your photo. I use the white almond bark.

Add a teaspoon of crisco shortening(lard) at a time to your chocolate to thin it out.

Anonymous said...

Or you can add coconut oil
